World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) just published one of the most influential annual reports the Global Innovation Index (GII), which focuses on the relative strengths of different countries’ innovation ecosystems.
Among the key findings of the 2021 report was that there was significant perseverance in investments into innovation during the pandemic, especially in fields involved with efforts to contain its consequences. At the same time, despite the economic slowdowns that COVID-19 has created, R&D expenditures increased much more than expected.
Greece’s Rankings in GII for 2021
For 2021 Greece ranked 30th among the 39 economies in Europe and performed better in innovation inputs than innovation outputs:
As seen in the table above, Greece ranked 39th in innovation inputs, higher than both 2020 and 2019, among the 51 high-income group economies. As for innovation outputs, Greece ranked 60th.
In addition, Greece performed best in Human capital and research. In specific, when it comes to benchmarking against other high-income group economies and Europe, Greece performed above the high-income group average in Human capital and research for high-income group economies and above the regional average in Human capital and research in Europe.
Thought-out 2021 the Greek IT market also experienced an investment “fever” which was followed by SEPE announcing that the index of business expectations in the domestic IT and Software Development market were significantly improved in comparison to 2020, to+23 points YoY.
For us in Athens Technology Center, to say that 2021 was challenging, is probably an understatement, as among others we had the honor of being part of several major public procurement projects in the ICT field, which constitute significant efforts to further automate and digitize the Greek public sector.
At the same time, to meet the needs of our growing areas of service delivery:
- We enriched our commercial portfolio and worked hard on exploring new features for our existing solutions, focusing on both vertical markets such as the Media, Manufacturing, Shipping, and Banking, but also horizontal sectors such as Human Capital Management, Corporate Newsroom, Big Data Analytics, and Custom Software Development.
- We set up and managed partnerships for delivering custom ICT services for national Authorities and Institutions as well as for international organizations.
